Recruitment Innovation Summit 2011 Interview - Lauren Friese, Founder, TalentEgg

Recently, Joe Minaudo, Social Community Manager of the upcoming Recruitment Innovation Summit spoke with Lauren Friese as part of a dynamic line of speakers that will lead sessions on October 26 and 27th 2011 in Toronto. The theme of Lauren’s presentation will be “Student Voice: Campus Recruitment from the Student Perspective.”
JM: Thanks and welcome back to this year's Recruitment Innovation Summit, Lauren! Your expertise with Campus and Recent Graduate hiring is of huge value to our communities.
LF: Thanks Joe. I’m excited to participate again!
JM: You have always displayed a strong understanding of the “expectation disconnect” between the Employer and Recent Graduate. Could you give us an example of one?
LF: The disconnect between what students/recent graduates want and expect versus what employers are doing can be applied at every level of the recruitment process. For example, the number one complaint among recent grads is that they don’t receive enough feedback in the recruitment process. Meanwhile, new employer investment is not going into improving ATS systems or employing more people to reply to student/recent grad requests (it’s going into social media!)
JM: It's often been said that money isn’t the only thing that gets most people out of bed in the morning. What specifically do you find gets Recent Grad’s really charged up and motivated?
LF: Recent grads are motivated by lots of things, and of course you can’t characterize an entire generation as one. That being said, one of the most interesting things that get Gen Y charged up and motivated is achievement and recognition. You can see this not only in the workplace, but also as a trait that is responsible for the popularity of Gen Y-focused Foursquare and Farmville.
JM: Finally, Social Media and its uses continue to be a prominent theme in the world of recruitment and job search. Could you bring us up to date with what you’ve learned about how Students and Recent Grads are leveraging Social Media?
LF: Our research shows that Social Media is not considered a job-searching tool. This is unfortunate for a number of reasons:
1 ) Because of the disconnect between employer spending on social media and the lack of usage for job-hunting purposes on the part of students.
2) Because students are missing out on a great, free opportunity to market themselves.
Employers need to remember that social media is just one part of online media, which has been the default way to search and network for jobs for many years now.
JM: Thank you time Lauren. We look forward to your presentation on “Student Voice: Campus Recruitment from the Student Perspective” at the Summit.
