Recently, Joe Minaudo, Social Community Manager of the upcoming Recruitment Innovation Summit spoke with Marianne Crann as part of a dynamic line of speakers that will lead sessions on October 26 and 27th 2011 in Toronto. The theme of Marianne’s presentation will be “Workforce Planning”.
JM: You’re such a wonderful addition to an already impressive line-up of speakers. Thank you for participating in this year's Recruitment Innovation Summit Marianne…
MC: I’m thrilled to be back at the conference again this year, and looking forward to hearing and learning from other experts in Recruitment.
JM: The topic of your presentation will be Workforce Planning. Could you tell our audience what Workforce Planning means to Rogers Communications and why it fits so closely with Recruitment?
MC: Workforce planning (WFP) is a guided process that helps the business articulate its need for talent in such a way that Recruiting and HR can help it meet its priorities.
Rogers has been working on the Workforce Planning initiative for a number of years. We believe that given the approximately 7000 hires per year we make in the company, we need a process to determine the priorities for our business to ensure focus and attention. This is so that our recruiting teams deliver these “PIVOTAL” hires to the business in a different way than we deliver the thousands of other hires.
Workforce planning aligns talent management activities to ensure Rogers has the right people in the right positions at the right time to execute its business strategy.
JM: In now having experienced the challenges and successes of implementing a Workforce Plan, what “lessons learned” have you taken away and what key points would you suggest other leaders to be mindful of?
MC: It’s still early days for us at Rogers in actually delivering hires against a list of pivotal role requirements. The biggest lesson we’ve learned is that we needed Recruitment to drive the discussions with the HR business partners and the clients. Early on, we had those roles reversed, and had the HR business partner in the lead role.
Also, this entire process takes time and persistence – you need to believe strongly in this initiative and leverage relationships with leaders across the company to help the not only conceptualize, but also build a recruitment solution/process that supports the initiative.
JM: What has implementing a Workforce Planning strategy meant for Rogers Communications?
MC: WFP is allowing Rogers to get the right people into the right roles at a pace just faster than our growth plans. WFP also makes sure our organization has the right capabilities to deliver on our vision.
JM: Would you recommend other organizations consider a Workforce Planning strategy? Can it be considered for all types and sizes of organizations, or are there companies where it may not work as well?
MC: Organizations need to consider the following:
· Your organization will need to determine which“work activities will drive competitive advantage” and drive that conversation with your HR business partners and with your business leaders.
· Ideally - build a segmented recruitment team to focus on the Pivotal roles
· Allow the process to be organic and not prescriptive
· Keep it simple
